How many versions of my resume do I need? Can you make the resume general, or do I need distinct versions? How can the resume be adapted for other positions or industries?The answer is that, ideally, you should need only one version of your resume.However, bedrngnis every situation is the same activities - and few are ideal.Why one resume is bestIn a perfect world, you are pursuing an executive position that lines up neatly with your most recent work and marks a new logical step in the types of positions through which you have progressed across your entire career. And to make the fit even more comfortable, youre pitching yourself to companies that are in the same or related i ndustries.If your career path is a straight line, a single resume version will meet the needs and expectations of the recruiters, HR folks and hiring executives youll encounter along the way.Great But most of us live in the real world, where things are not so linear or clear cut. If your job trajectory has more curves ahead, a single version of your resume would either miss the mark or be too broad to prove your specific qualifications for each situation.When a second version is requiredIf you need to address distinct audiences, youll need more than one version of your resume. However, lets not go crazy. Here is the basic wisdom on when to create a new versionSame industrySame positionOne master resume can do all the heavy lifting.Slightly different positionA tweak will do. If you are pursuing positions that are very similar, but not exactly the same, a few strategic adjustments to the main resume should be enough to make it look like you wrote the document specifically for that rol e. In these cases, I wouldnt consider these documents a new resume version, just tweaks or amendments to the original.Multiple positionsA second resume version is required. You want to create a completely distinct resume version when you are pursuing totally unrelated positions or positions that are highly specialized. If you want to target large corporations, the CEO and CIO positions will be quite different, and the company will be looking for a candidate who is very focused on one particular role. In this case, lets say youve held both positions at different times. You would prepare a resume that highlights your technical leadership accomplishments for the CIO job and a separate resume that details your organizational leadership achievements to align with a companys need for a CEO.New industrySame positionA tweak will do. If you are pursuing the same position but decided to target a new industry, you neednt create a whole new document. Example Youre a sales executive whos worked in multimedia advertising, and you would like to pursue sales positions in advertising as well as an unrelated field - lets say medical devices. Simply tweaking the content in your summary, keywords and other critical areas may suffice to demonstrate that youre ready to apply your sales experience to a new industry.Slightly different positionOne master resume is enough. Make sure your career goal is refined, and try to stick to one new version that emphasizes your new goal throughout. Switching industries and positions is the toughest of all job moves. Just care about everything you do and you will find yourself doing it as well as you possibly can.Connect to a PurposeThe people that I know who are riveted with a purpose in their professional lives are the ones who care the most about every detail. They see their work as merely the mechanism for fulfilling a greatly engrained purpose. You have to know why you do what you do. There are only three great sources of passion that I know of. You either have to love what you do, love who you do it for, or both.Some people love the work they do. They love building teams or they love making something that no one thought was possible or they love some aspect of their work. Some people dont love what they do, but they love who they do it for. They are helping to send a child to college or helping a child who has been mentally or physically challenged or being there for an aging parent. They love the person so much they are driven to do their best work every day.Fit within a Larger PictureIn the Creativity Age no one works in a silo. We are all connected to other people in our work. Even if you run a one-person business, your efforts are still interlinked with the work of other people. How does the value you create and deliver today fit within the larger picture of your organization, your community, or the worlds market place? Working hard on the details of a project is only of real value if it hel ps other people to achieve what they want to achieve.Those are five of the critical keys for working successfully in the Creativity Age. In many ways, these are the same keys to a successful career that were true in earlier ages. However, back in those days you could count on getting a job in an organization and keeping it for the rest of your career. You could count on competition being limited to your geographical area. Those parameters no longer exist. Now more than ever before you have to constantly be creative in finding ways to add more value to other people.

What I dont understand is this Im seeing jobs that are absolutely perfect for me. I could do them in my sleep. But I still cant manage to get a call back.Long, long ago, in a galaxy leid so far away, someone put the notion in your head that job search is a numbers game. So when you apply for 170 jobs in 4 months, how is it that youre still losing the game?Ill tell you how it likely has to do with what you believe. And, naturally, your beliefs guide your actions. So lets dispense with the old school beliefs that are keeping you deckenfries in your job search significantly longer than you thought you would be.If I just apply for more jobs, Ill get more calls.So, no. The 1st problem I see in the 170 jobs in 4 months scenario is the high likelihood you are not qualified for that many jobs.But your belief in this case, lets call it a wish is tha t you can cast the invisible wide net so you dont miss out on any opportunities, and some employer somewhere at some time sooner rather than later will see you as the ideal applicant.It just doesnt happen that way. And when you stop to think about it, when has it ever happened that way? WHY do you believe more jobs has to equal more calls back? In the 80s, you applied for a few jobs, went on a few interviews, and got hired. In the 90s, you networked your way into one job after the next, after the next. This whole concept of resume blasting came about in the 2000s and guess what it didnt work then either.Instead of resume blasting, apply for 1/2 the number of jobs, but go deeper with each attempt. Adjusting a few of your other beliefs will prove helpful.That job posting was perfect for meSo, lets examine that from a few different perspectives.The job is perfect for you because youve done that exact thing before. This is the strongest position. I want you to take a look at your resum e. What does it actually SAY, because theres a big difference between knowing in your mind that youve done the job, and your resume actually stating that.Another scenario the job is perfect for you because you have the skills and ability to perform the work. Youre going to have a slightly more difficult row to hoe here, but it is still reasonable to land the role you have your eye on.This is where youll likely need to make some resume adjustments. Its always a good idea to have a base version of your resume, then customize it to align with the particular opportunity. Customize means just that it does not mean overhaul.Look at the ad and identify the top 3-5 things youll be doing in the job. An easy way to identify these primary tasks is to ask yourself, What will the employer want me to do that hell actually be writing me a check for? That question will easily move you away from things like having communication skills and being a team player, to the true fundamentals of the role.On ce you identify those 3-5 tasks, make koranvers your resume says you can do them. Whats important here is to use the same language on your resume that you see in the ad you literally need to speak the employers language.I went through the trouble of customizing my resume, so now they should call me.There is no prescribed number of steps to take in your job search. There is no equation. You dont put your resume on a job board, then stop. You dont customize your resume, then stop. You dont apply, then stop.You keep going until you land. And dare I say it keep searching for the 1st 2 weeks after you land that new job, just in case something doesnt work out.The next step to take is to contact the relevant person directly. There is zero reason for you to not do this, in these days of LinkedIn, Google, social media, and just the whole Internet. In fact, if youre not reaching out directly to someone regarding EVERY opportunity, then youre just not pursuing that opportunity.If you dont k now the relevant persons name from the posting, call up your best friend and mine, Google, and ask for HR or recruiter at IBM.
